You know your Aussie sheds too much when…

Aussies have lots of undercoat. In fact, when people ask me about the breed, I mention their intelligence, their sense of humor, activity level, and that the breed sheds. A lot.

To cope with the shedding, I have two Dyson floor vacuums plus a hand held Dyson. I could do commercials for Dyson; I love them.

I also brush the dogs regularly and have a variety of brushes, combs, curry combs and other tools that I use. Through years of Aussie coats, I have a pretty good idea what works best.

However, I didn’t realize I was growing an Aussie brush. This branch of the fern is just at the dog’s back height. They run under it to go to the back yard.

I know the photo is kind of, well, weird and a tiny bit gross but hey, I’ll take grooming help anywhere I can get it.

That’s been my experience also. Her fur collects on the welcome mat at the back door and in the spring, the birds come take it off the mat. Either my dog is cleaner than I thought, or the birds just aren’t that picky.

I did collect it one year and a friend spun it into yarn. I didn’t do anything with it though because it wasn’t as soft as I expected. The undercoat is soft but the outer coat is coarser than I expected. So the yarn was prickly. So no, I just let the birds have it.

The Aussies are generally clean but the birds have never turned down shed coat; clean or dirty!

I’m collecting my Aussie’s fur so that I can crochet a scarf. I was told it will take somewhere between one and two pounds. I’ve met two or three spinners who are willing to clean, card and spin it for me. She’s a blue merle, so the scarf should be a very pretty grey. Some people think this is gross, but c’mon people, it’s washed first, and washable when I’m done!

That works if the fur is clean but birds won’t take dirty or oily fur.

So Liz, are you going to collect it and felt it or make mattresses like they used to with horse hair? :-)

Thats so funny ! We always brush everyone outside so the squirrels & birds can use it for nests.

Note to self: NEVER complain to anybody ever again about the hair left behind by a long-haired dachshund.
